Welcome

This started as a blog about Microsoft Flight Simulator. As I investigated why the DX10 Preview option didn’t work properly it then became almost exclusively about improving the DX10 experience. The blog posts describing the early DX10 experiments can still be viewed in the archives.

Ultimately I released a product DX10 Scenery Fixer to address these issues and the blog is now almost exclusively about that product and its development.

I am sorry but the fixer and cloud shadows are no longer for sale.

Steve

Hello Steve, I have restarted my system and had already purchased the DX10 Fixer. Is it possible to give me access to this again? Love thanks in advance, Jonas

  2. James Turek says:

Steve, everything, both the payware fixer and clouds working perfectly. One question though: “Toned shadows”. Have never seen this in either the fsx.cfg file or in the simulation itself. Can it be obtained elsewhere? Thanks

    • stevefsx says:

Toned shadows is a fixer option that is enabled by default these days – shadows on the aircraft should be the same colour as those parts of the aircraft facing away from the sun.

  3. noahv says:

    Hi Steve!

    Thanks for everything.

Downloaded your scenery fixer, suffering from flashing runways. As I tried to install it, it tells me it’s not finding my general10.fx files and that I should just run my FSX with DX10 preview mode. Nothing changes, still flashing runways!

    What I am doing wrong?

    Thanks for your reply!

    • stevefsx says:

Do you mean the actual payware scenery fixer or the simple set of unsupported free patches ?

      • noahv says:

        Hi Steve

        Thanks for your reply

Just the simple set of free patches.

      • stevefsx says:

I abandoned those 7 years ago and they only fix a few simple issues. If you tell me the precise error I will look in the script, but e.g they don’t know anything about fsx steam edition dual installs as steam edition didn’t exist back then.

      • Noah says:

Basically it concerns two Taxi2Gate addons, TKPK and TFFR. If I could send you a screenshot, you’d see that the runway and taxiway flickering is rather intense.
So I went and found your fixer, but didn’t manage to use it properly. Going to try with the payware scenery next.

I use an old Vista system, FSX with SP2 I think.

        Thank you.

  4. steve avery says:

Hi, sometimes the cloud shadows don’t show?, do I need to start anything each time I start FSX? e.g. turn on the configurator every time prior to starting FSX?

    thanks

    • Anonymous says:

Ahh just realized water needs to be at mid 2X!

    • stevefsx says:

I think that you have answered your own question? No you don’t need to start anything when you run FSX. You do need to set everything up as per manual including water slider at 2.mid – at that level clouds are drawn in the water reflection pass fo i.e for cloud refelctions – cloud shadows extends that logic to also generate the cloud shadows.

Steve, I’ve purchased (2) DX10 fixers. I don’t have either. Lost one in a Microsoft update, the other I forgot that I purchased it and they, the sim store, no longer support downloads. Need a new download. The latest downloaded from Fast Spring License. 1st purchase Flight Sim Store, 01-26-2017. Order STE200111-1096-76145. They no longer support this download. I have a quandry, can you help? Thanks

  5. R-TEAM says:

    Hi,
have bought DX10 SF from flight sim store … cant update/Download ….

  6. Mark Morgan says:

Hi, typical, I just get my PC stable, went to buy the DX10 fixer (generally regarded as essential on our FB group) and found that its not available. Will you be making it available again anytime soon please? I’m hoping you do, I have seen the results on others systems, and would love to have the same. Thanks

  7. I have a nvidia 740M, fsx not listing this graphic card when i’m selecting preview dx10, it list intel graphics only, any idea?

  8. chrispy01 says:

Hi Steve, first of all I want to say a MASSIVE thank you for all of your work on the DX10 FSX scene, my frame rate is just stupidly good.

The only problem I have with DX10 is some of the aerosoft payware airports. I hae the FSDG Sharm El Sheikh scenery, and at dusk, night and dawn, the whole airport (excluding buildings and static objects) go grey. This is a huge shame, the airport itself is immensely beautiful during these times.

The same goes for Barcelona too, except this time less severe. The static aircraft, and Jetways all go grey.

What dissapoints me the most is that the developers refuse to work with these bugs, they have said it themselves that “DX10 is a preview, and is not therefore stable to work with, so we only work with DX9”. Is there any fix that I have missed?

Many thanks, I absolutely love your work!
    Chris

    • stevefsx says:

The problem you describe is that the airports are built with the older sdk. The only solution is to buy my dx10 scenery fixer from the flight sim store which addresses these issues.

    • Richard says:

There’s a slider in the fixer you can work with (don’t remember the name on the top of my head) which will allow you to set compatibility for I believe it’s aircraft and scenery.

I have both airports you mention and they work fine as far as I can recall so must be some settings that are different between our setups.

As for Aerosoft I find it rather amusing how they not that long ago was everything but interested in supporting DX10 while they now list DX10 compatibility for many of their new airports.

  9. paulhiggc7 says:

Hi Steve, I just found out about your fixer but I’m an intermediate type. My rig and add-ons are as follows, can you tell me if they will be compatible or not compatible?
From reading “Mutley’s Hangar he gives rave reviews and I am interested but where to begin?

This is the sort of question that is very hard to answer as I have only a few of the same addons.

Any aircraft or scenery built with the FSX SDK will be fine.

      So A2A/PMDG are fine.

Most Fly Tampa airports work with the fixer and they will tell you if any don’t

You are much better asking on the avsim DX10 forum

      • paulhiggc7 says:

Thank you Steve. I have read about this fix on Mutley’s Hangar. It doesn’t seem easy to install and tweak for my comfort level. I’d like to try it but he says one has to uninstall it and reinstall a new version all the time and re set it all up again. Will you ever write a version to make this easier? I wish I had your programming skills, I’m not even good at tweaking but I”m learning.
Is there a guide or a manual somewhere I can look at to see what to expect if I buy it and try ton\ install it?

      • stevefsx says:

The current version retains all settings and there is no need to uninstall anything.

Flaps are more whiter (brighter) than wings.

  11. Ali says:

Tried in debug set shadow version set to 3 and it is working with HD, it was at 6. 🙂 I will keep you posted if anything changes.

  12. Ali says:

    Steve,

Thank you for the VC shadows ans it look amazing but, there is an issue with it, whenever I look around in cockpit shadow move along with it. I only tested with PMDG 777 and 747 ( I checked the HD Shadows and EZDOK and Enable Shadow ). Love your work with DX10 🙂

When I unchecked the HD it works fine but, I would like in HD.

    Thank you,

    • stevefsx says:

Ok do all shadows move or just some shadows and how fast do they move?
I have read contradictory reports for these aircraft as some people have suggested that shadow stopped working after the last service pack, other people say they are fine.
Try unselecting Adaptive Zoom in the debug dialog.

      • ali says:

Thanks for the reply back, well I am using the EZDOK and TracIR. This is only happened when panning around the cockpit and yes all shadow also move along with it. I will try unselecting Adaptive Zoom in the debug dialog.

      • stevefsx says:

If its all shadows that move then I doubt the disabling adaptive zoom will do anything. The other thing to try is again in debug set shadow version to 3 and if that works increase to 4 and so on

      • ali says:

Thanks, I will try that but, this only happened when I clicked on HD without HD it works perfectly fine.

  13. Flaps says:

    Hi Steve, two quick questions:

    1) Works the usepools=0 tweak in DX10 mode? I get the same performance with or without it.

    2) With AI traffic I lose 5 fps in DX10 compared with DX9 (same airplane, scenery, hour, etc..) Any idea?

    Regards

    • stevefsx says:

      1) I didn’t see any great changes in dx9 – I don’t have any reason to believe that it doesn’t work.

      2) It may be that your AI is using legacy (FS8) models and that the rendering is not as efficient.

  14. OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH MAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIII GAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTT THAAAAAAANKKKKKKKKK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUU I FUCKING LOVE YOU STEVE PARSONS! Searched you in twitter without success, OMGGG! My nvidia Geforce GT 635M seems to have some software bugging with FSX, know issue in nvidia forums and it will ONLY run good with DX10 which was a pain, you not only fixed my ORBX lights and runway but THE WHOLE THING SEEMS TO RUN SMOOTHER, BETTER AND STABLE FPS, I will go tell FSX enthusiasts with 635M in nvidia forum right now, giving you ALL CREDITS offc. THANK YOU AGAIN! LONG LIVE STEVE

Hello i have a problem when using steve’s dx10 with sweetfx, when info text appears i got flashes . i hide all info via hideinfotext is 1 in fsx cfg, but i use fs2crew and i cannot disable their texts. help much appreciated thx

    • stevefsx says:

if you uininstall the libraries and run in default Dx10 does the same occur?

      • Aviator19791 says:

yes steve even with version 2.5 other people have also reported that problem on avsim but that site i ignore from now on since a pmdg idiot mod with an italian name rr banned me because i was critical about their support ,all drivers up-to-date ,
        thx steve

  16. Jim H. says:

Steve, Thanks for all your work finding ways to get FSX to work better. Your expertise is invaluable. Just a thought…FSX always has running in the background the recording of the flight so that it can be replayed. This must be a huge burden on the computer system (based on experience from running FRAPS). Could it be possible to somehow temporarily turn this ongoing recording off, when it isn’t desired, in order to gain a big increase in framerates?

  17. Bram Stikkel says:

Steve, how are you doing ?

  18. Porkie says:

@steve; hi steve, ive been enjoying your free fixer files for a while now (i unfortunately missed the boat for the payware) and am extremely grateful for your efforts to fix dx10, they really have changed my fsx experience.

Anyway to get to the point I’ve had a quick chat with Chris Bell, the developer of an addon series called Night Environment. He mentioned you had worked with him to get his program supported by your dx10 fixer in the form of “Vitaly lights”.

I was wondering if you would consider helping me to get Night Environment working on my machine or maybe pointing me in the right direction as to why these light poles dont show up but FTX ones do? Forgive me for being forward, but if you dont ask you dont get!

  19. ali says:

    Steve,

Where can I purchase SteveFX DX10, FlightSIM no longer have it there.

  20. Cezar says:

Hi where can I buy this product its not in flightsim store anymore Thanks.

  21. angeli662 says:

Hi Steve I am late on the game of DirectX 10 fix and would love to try, but can find anywhere to purchase.
could you let me know where could I get it?
    thanks

  22. Hello steve i would like to switch to DX10 and your fixer would really help me but i can’t find it anywhere there is word that you may of removed it. If this is the case i hope its back soon and i am getting frustrated with my OOM errors recently and dont know what else to do

    Cheers-James

  23. Pierre says:

    Hi Steve
Thank you very much for your fixes. It works well on my computer. The only issue is that IVAO MTL still appears with white texture. Do you know if Add On Converter will solve this issue because I am about to buy it since Scenery Fixer is no more available for sale.

    Regards
    Pierre

  24. cadmar1944 says:

This is a serious inquiry what’s the mileage in using DX10 instead of DX9 as I am not sure I want to take this step if there is no advantage in doing so. Thanks for any comments.

  25. Kim says:

I’m in the same boat as Markus and Ben. Would you please think about selling it again ?

  26. Ben says:

I’ve just bought a new system with windows 8.1 and can’t run dx9 at all so I’m using 10 and need to buy the fixer! 😦

  27. Markus says:

    Steve,
I’ve read that you asked to stop selling your product.

Well, I have a bit of a problem: got FTX, wasn’t aware of the black boxes where lights should be (at day). Found your tool, can’t buy it.

And: I can’t use DX9 because FSX simply insists on using 1024×768 resolution (instead of my usual 2560×1600) in DX9 no matter what I try. I’m a bit desperate now…

Could you please consider putting it back on sale or allowing me to buy it somehow?
    Don’t know what else I could try…

  28. Robert-Jan says:

Steve I want to thank you for the product. It’s the one product in the last years that has made the biggest improvement for my FSX.

  29. Hi Steve, I’m covering FSX on my yt channel and would really like to purchase a copy of the DX10 fixer as, sadly, I went to order it the day after you pulled it.

  30. mopperle says:

That’s really a shame, but I can understand your frustration. People get more and more demanding, but on the other side they are not willing to read a documentation with a minimum of understanding.
Just look at this thread: people ask a question, although it has already been answered a few lines above.
I myself work as Co-Moderator in another flightsim community and looking at the behaviour of many people, sometimes I ask my self, why the fu… am I doing this.

But anyway: keep up the godd work and come back with other enhancements whether freeware or payware!
    😉

  31. Martin Streuter says:

Where cani I buy the Fixer?

    Kind regards

    Martin

  32. David says:

All I can say is thanks Steve you made FSX better than it was.

  33. Paul Laube says:

Whats the future I just purchased it 2 days ago?

  34. Fery says:

Hi Steve, your scenery fixer is gone from flightsim store at this moment. Do u know what happened?

    • stevefsx says:

Yes i asked them to stop selling it

      • Richard says:

        May I ask why?

Good thing I already downloaded the latest version then.

      • stevefsx says:

I have just stopped selling any new copies for the time being, that is all that has happened. You can still download if you have purchased. I felt that too many people have been buying it recently without trying dx10 out first leading to a mismatch in their expectations ( and an increase in support calls)

      • Richard says:

        Ok, thanks for the information.

I find the current version extremely good and I’m very grateful for all the hard work you put into the product so far.

I wouldn’t want to run FSX into DX9 again now that I got used to DX10 with all benefits that comes with it and all that is made possible because of your tool so big thanks again!

      • Jarkko says:

Just wanted to say, that I purchased your product about a week ago and have been enjoying it immensely.

  35. Cephas Kang says:

    Hi Steve,

Regarding your shader fix, I have installed it previously and it was working great! However, I have to reinstall fsx a few weeks ago and I have encountered the same problems of flickering runways etc etc. However this time round when I launched setup.bat , it says that it does not have the permission to create files under shaderHSLS/General. I have checked and ensure that it has the full admin rights, but it still doesn’t work.

    Any Idea?

    Thanks!

    • stevefsx says:

Yes, I would guess you have installed fsx to program files. On some windows 7 systems related there are issues with write permissions in these directories even for admin users. The only solutions are to install fsx to another location or to take a copy of shadersHLSL and run the setup against that.

  36. Max says:

    Hello Steve
i want to install, but then it says : C\users\ADMimi~1\appData\local… could not find. Whats the Problem?

    Thanks

  37. Greg Smith says:

    Hello Steve
Thanks for the help getting the Dx10 Scenery Fixer running however a new problem with DX10 lights has arose.I downloaded the FTX Global Lights Configurator and istalled it now in DX10 I have no taxi or runway lights and the street lights blink off at certain angles .I put the LightField.Bgl file in KORS after removing it but it didn’t change anything .Before I installed and ran the FTX Global Lights Config. everything was working fine in my system.I was wondering if they made the FTX Global Light Config. for DX9 only and not DX10 because in DX10 it causes problems with the lights.I thought I would run this by you first, hope you don’t mind and have you heard of anyone else having this problem?I’ve triend running different airports to see if it was just related to KORS but other airports have the same results. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks for your time.
    Best Regards.

  38. Greg Smith says:

    Hello Steve

Steve’s DX10 Scenery Fixer was working fine but for some reason when switching the DX10 AA to any number say 4x when I exit out and come back the DX10 AA is blank and there is nothing there.I’ve repeated this a number of times and it still comes back blank. I don’t know if the whole program is affected but now my Orbx lights are blinking off in DX10 mode but were fine before. I’ve also tried a re-install of Steve’s DX10 Fixer but nothing helps. I’m running Dual AMD Radeon 7700 (crossfire X)1GB GDDR5 each

    ASUS P8P67 Mobo,i7-2600(2nd Gen,4cores with HT,3.4GHz per core)

Raid 0 Array of 2 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  39. Carlos Diaz says:

I am sorry to post a comment again, but can you, Steve, or perhaps somebody else how to enable Anisotropic Filtering (AF) in FSX DX10 for an ATI Radeon GPU? I have chosen Anisotropic filtering in FSX instead of forcing AF using RadeonPro (and viceversa) and even FSX Anisotropic enabled with Overriding of AF with RadeonPro. Anything has worked. It is important to say that the antialiasing works perfectly; it is the ANISOTROPIC FILTERING what does not work in FSX DX10.

    • stevefsx says:

It should just work fine. Are you sure your problem is actually filtering? There is a dx10 forum on sim-outhouse where you can post a picture perhaps.

  40. Hello Steve
I bought your program DX10 fix I installed but the problem is that I can not install the biblioteque and without the installation program does not work.
Can you give me the procedure to follow so that I can make the most of the improvement of DX10?
    Thank you and goodbye

    José

  41. Carlos Diaz says:

Can somebody get the AntiAliasing to work in FSX DX10? Because I cannot! I’ve tried everything Steve says in this webpage, but it simply does not work.

    FSX SP2
    ATI Radeon HD 7670M

    • stevefsx says:

What do I say, it’s easy tick the in game aa and set sgaa in NVI. It doesn’t antialias the free flight rotating plane as aces set that up with no aa, it’s just an accident you can force it to be so with dx9.

      • adamski123 says:

If the AA for the spinning aircraft preview bothers you, set “Toggle FXAA” to ON in NVI (“FXAA” is “Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing”).

      • Richard says:

I’ve tried that before but in my case it didn’t work.

Not a big problem though since AA works just fine once inside FSX.

      • Carlos Diaz says:

That would be great if I just had a Nvidia GPU! My GPU is an ATI Radeon HD 7670M. Is it possible to use the Nvidia Inspector with an ATI card?

      • Carlos Diaz says:

Good news! I already got the AA to work. But I’m having another issue. The concrete, asphalt, airline names on the fuselage, grass, etc, look very grainy as if textures in FSX had no Filtering at All. The sky looks ok. I have set Anisotropic filtering in FSX settings, but it does not work. Please tell me what to do. Apart from that, DX10 is working ok.

  42. Sherman Kaplan says:

Hi Steve and all. I am very satisfied with the Fixer. But, there is one issue. When I move an undocked screen, such as the Garmin to my 2nd monitor, my mouse cursor gets jumpy and frame rates slow from wherever they might be into the low to mid single digits. This means that I have to reboot FSX, and obviously cannot move my Garmin to another screen. I searched the forum and found nothing about this, also did a google global search without any results. Has anyone had a similar problem, and if so, is there a cure? Thanks.

    Sherm

    • stevefsx says:

I don’t have multiple monitors but if you check Paul’s guide on avsim he was discussing this recently there is some advice to resize undocked windows before moving to the 2nd monitor so they get increased in size

  43. Good day Steve. Using Fixer long time i could name myself as happy customer. But one problem still existing – DX10 Compatible Reflections button greyed out. Shaders were succefuly restored, Rain button became alive but for reflections – no.. What should be done? pleased to hear

  44. Raczynsky says:

    Hi Steve,
I have a problem. All my airports DRZEWIECKI DESIGN does’t work properly on dx10 and scenery fix 😦
I mean the runway and taxi lights are flashing all the time. Can You help? Pllizzz 😦

    • stevefsx says:

What options did you select on th library install? And have you installed a light field for each of the airports?

      • Raczynski says:

i have used all option in dx10 controller, Lights Package, Compatible effects and reflections, AAto 4x.
What do You mean by light field for each of the airports?

      • stevefsx says:

It’s in the manual at the end of the effects section, there is a zipped directory for every airport with a bgl file to install if you have an issue with runways lights that go out as you move your point of view

  45. Richard says:

Learned from a friend version 2 of the DX10SF has been released.

Haven’t had the chance to try it out yet, is there anywhere I can read about the news in version 2 now that the official support forum over at Avsim is down?

  46. Don Hartsel says:

Hi all. I purchased the DX10 Scenery Fixer some months ago and have been very pleased with Steve’s work. Over the past few months I have been doing some occasional comparisons between FSX’s native DX9 and the DX10 Preview. I am running a Windows 7 64-bit system with DX11. A few days ago something happened (not sure what) that caused the DX9 BLACK SCREEN in FSX while DX10 is OK. I know there is information about this on the AVSIM forum but unfortunately it is still down. Any ideas, suggestions, help would be appreciated. I have run SFC /SCANNOW and the system indicates no issues. In addition, I have attempted to “reinstall” my Windows 7 DX11 dll’s to no avail. Windows 7 will not allow an overwrite. Aditionally, I reinstalled FSX from an earlier backup I made that I know for certain, had no Black Screen issue.

    • stevefsx says:

I dont know what to say really. DX10SF doesn’t touch anything DX9 related. If you are seeing a black screen in the free flight view in DX9 mode then either there is a problem with a dll or something has changed the DX9 shaders such that they don’t compile. Are you using sweetfx there was a windows update that broke it – KB2670838.

      • Don Hartsel says:

Thanks Steve. No, I do not use sweetfx. I agree that a potential DX9 DLL issue may exist. In retracing my steps since the last use of DX9 (March 6th) I was doing a few things using OPUS Weather. Problem seems to have surfaced after using OPUS but I didn’t discover the issue until March 8th – thus really hard to be sure. As I stated earlier, Windows 7 doesn’t give me the ability to just remove and then reinstall DX dlls. BTW, how could I look at the DX9 shaders to see if not compiling?

      • Don Hartsel says:

Steve, I suddenly realized that before I installed your DX10 fixes last November, I made a copy of the Shader folders. Do you think that replacing the existing Shader Folders with the backups I made in November and then reinstalling your DX10 Fixer, might be a viable approach to a fix?

      • stevefsx says:

If you have a backup It can do no harm to reinstall the shader sources explicitly – you then need to delete the \Appdata\Microsoft\fsx\Shaders directory and run FSX to rebuild them

No luck. I think I will just have to discover how to replace the dlls for the DX9 and DX11 support files. Running with DX10 Preview with all of your fixes poses no problems for me since everything, with exception of some FriendlyPanels C172/182 aircraft (orange instruments at night), and the Abacus C162 Skycatcher (opaque/frosted windows), works very well.

I’ve just purchased your DX10 Scenery fixer from the FlightSim Store and installed it on my PC through the FlightSim Store wrapper.but I don’t know where to find my license key number to validate and install the libraries….Where do I find the key number? Thankyou…..

    • stevefsx says:

Did the fss provide a license for the wrapper? If you are being prompted for another licenses then the install has gone wrong. The box asking for the other license says that as well. Uninstall and install again is all I can suggest. If you kill the splash screen during the install it will cause this, but that is quite hard to do

@Steve: Thank you so much for all of this information. I was wondering if you may be able to help me….

I recently received a pretty good machine from work. See below for DxDiag info. I have the most recent windows updates and device drivers. After installing FSX Gold (without a hitch), whenever I try to launch FSX.exe, I get an error message saying “FSX Cannot run … version of DirectX not compatible… Please reinstall v.9.0 by running FSX setup or microsoft.com/directx”. Of course I am running current Win8.1 DirectX.

Is there an “easy” fix to this?

I so appreciate any help, and let me know if you would like to discuss a donation 🙂

    Regards,
    Dan

You would be much better off asking this on Avsim. Try installing again but don’t use the default directory as oddities can occur – select eg c:\fsx – let the installer install what it wants – fsx is compiled against a specific version of DX9 – you need it installed I think

Where can I check, that the “ballast lights” are realy added to the aircraft?
Is there a new line in the aircraft.cfg or something else?
