DX10 Cloud Shadows Update

For those people who have downloaded version 1.0.1 of Cloud Shadows I have prepared an updated version v 1.1.0 to address a couple of issues that have been found..

Issues Resolved

  1. At dawn and dusk shadows could sometimes appear incorrectly.
  2. Cloud shadows did not appear when you were in the VC of an aircraft that did not show VC shadows.
  3. A paused flight that was loaded would not show cloud shadows until it was unpaused.

Outstanding Issues

  1. When FSX is paused cloud shadows may occasionally not appear or appear incorrectly.

Known Incompatibilities

  1. FSL Spotlights – cloud shadows are never shown
  2. Reshade version 3 – cloud shadows are never shown. Legacy versions prior to version 3 are ok.

I don’t believe that either of these can be fixed. If this is a problem for you then send me an email to the yahoo email address in the manual.

Update Procedure if you obtained DX10SceneryFixer from FastSpring

  1. Download Build 97 of DX10SceneryFixer from Fastspring (same URL that you used for the previous version) and install it (no need to uninstall the existing version)
  2. Download V1.1.0 of DX10 CloudShadows from Fastspring (same URL that you used for the previous version and install it (no need to uninstall the existing version)
  3. Launch DX10Controller and Update the libraries.

That’s it – now run FSX.

Update Procedure if you obtained DX10SceneryFixer from the Flight Sim Store

Follow the instructions as written and do not skip steps. Basically it’s a full uninstall followed by an install, but unlike the Fastspring process you will need to have your licenses to hand and there is a final step to update the libraries that you must not forget.

Stage 1 – Uninstall Everything

  1. Launch DX10 Controller and uninstall the libraries
  2. Open Control Panel -> programs and uninstall DX10CloudShadows and SteveFSX DX10SceneryFixer

Stage 2 Reinstall DX10 Scenery Fixer – this is the normal Flight Sim Store Install process.

  1. Reinstall version 3.1 build 96 of Dx10SceneryFixer following the Flight Sim Store process
  2. Install the libraries in DX10 Controller and close it

Stage 3 Reinstall DX10 Cloud Shadows – this is exactly the same process installation process as you would have done previously followed except for the popup message at step 5

  1. Download V1.1.0 of DX10 CloudShadows from Fastspring (same URL that you used for the previous version) – and install it.
  2. Launch DX10 Controller and Update the libraries – the AddOns button will then appear
  3. Go into the Addon Dialog and enter the license for DX10 Cloud Shadows as you did before.

(be careful here – there may be a windows elevation prompt that can get hidden if you should switch to another window to look at the license to be entered)

  4. A popup will appear saying it has patched the fixer to build 97
  5. Close the DX10Controller

Stage 4 – Final Update of Libraries – this is new.

  1. Launch DX10 Controller and Update the libraries

That’s it – now run FSX.

About stevefsx

I don't use FSX that much. But I am very annoyed when it doesn't work properly!

I have sent you an email

For completeness this is now fixed. There was a long standing (relatively benign) issue with the fixer with some scenarios where there was a fsx-se directory but steam was using the fsx directory – possibly to do with uninstalls/reinstalls. With the fixer this at worst caused the fixer AA settings to not work. With cloud shadows the wrong dll.xml was used and cloud shadows did not work at all. The next release of the fixer and cloud shadows will address this.

Hello again Steve, just a few shadow related questions.
    1) Is there any chance that cloud shadows could be faded out or even disappear a little lower. I find that the transition at 1000feet is a bit sudden.
    2) I haven’t yet tested anywhere else but the Houses in FTX Australia aren’t shadowed by the clouds creating a weird look. http://prntscr.com/dfgssh
    3) I’m not sure which side to talk to but the DX10 shadows move with Chaseplane, I’ve tried with and without the EZdok fix. (First time using a Camera Addon)
    4) Is there any way to fix this issue? http://prnt.sc/dfdxvr
I have an issue in the NGX where there is a gap in the shadow between the Fuselage and the wing. In this shot I’ve moved the camera up to follow the manual advice regarding wing range.

Thank you for the amazing things you’ve made possible in DX10.
    Brendan

      hello Brendan

      1. They do fade over about 300 ft from memory so I am puzzled – try flying over water to see this – is it an effect with hills surrounding an airport that you are seeing?
      2. Cloud shadows only show on water and the ground they do not show on autogen – it might be possible to do so in the distance at least in future I am not sure.
      3. What happens with HD shadows off?
      4. I think what you are reporting is bias – try reducing the bias offset in the controller a bit.

      • QFA1213 says:

Thanks, ill have abit more of a play with it. Regarding the first issue I only noticed it once so maybe it was just something like that.

I replyed to your email but since I never received a response I’ll repost here.

        1. They do fade over about 300 ft from memory so I am puzzled – try flying over water to see this – is it an effect with hills surrounding an airport that you are seeing?
I’ve done a few flight since and haven’t noticed any issues, it probably didn’t help that I was coming into Orbx YBBN (One of the worst preforming payware airports out there) and was getting below 10fps during the approach I was referencing in the post.
        2. Cloud shadows only show on water and the ground they do not show on autogen – it might be possible to do so in the distance at least in future I am not sure.
That would be amazing if you could get it to work.
        3. What happens with HD shadows off?
Issue fixed with HD shadows off but obviously there is a significant lose in quality.
        4. I think what you are reporting is bias – try reducing the bias offset in the controller a bit.
My setting for bias when reporting was 1 and I’ve tried moving it to both max and min values and the issues remains the same. I found that the Toned Shadows and Reduce Falloff with angle reduce how much the issue stands out but that’s really only disguising the issue by reducing the shadows around it. I’m not sure if this is related but the part of the fuselage that is not shadowing is on the wing texture sheet as opposite to the fuselage one.

        1 & 2 are address in version 1.3

I cannot remember what your issue 3 – was – there was a long delay in you replying to my email

        4. I am sure that this will appear identical in DX9 – was you camera a long way away and zoomed in a lot?
